What we Stand for

Recently there have been news reports of incidents that could be characterized as racially intolerant nature. We believe these incidents are not representative of our City, its leaders nor its Citizens. Santa Fe is proud to be an open and inclusive, but it’s hard to talk about big issue that challenge us in Northern New Mexico, such as poverty, hunger and lack of real opportunities to achieve the American Dream still stand in the forefront of our daily lives, nor are we talking about solution such as real living wages, an affordable roof over everyone’s head, or jobs with justice.

We are not facing the ugly specter of racism head on so we are putting the band back on the road. Rock against Racism perceive and challenge the internal and external system that reinforces racial oppression. We use the powerful combination of music film, dialogue and transformative learning in diversity that creates new understandings. In addition, we work to heal the wounds of racism by building our community and cultivating the practices of love-in-action and respect: kindness, non-judgment, compassion, deep listening.

Rock Against Racism will spark individuals committed and open the way for institutional change. RAR promotes “Take every opportunity to learn more about cultures, past and present,” Understanding and empathizing with people different from us in some way will not only enrich our own world but eradicate the fear that many have when faced with what we don’t understand. When we step out of our own worldview and learn about others, with an open mind, It becomes impossible to ignore the astounding similarities that all humans on the planet share.

We need to face racism head-on in order to have healthy communities and a strong country. Racism and gaps among racial and ethnic groups affect education, housing, health care, the justice system and job opportunities. If we’re going to make progress in our communities and in our country, people from all backgrounds and views must work together to address racism and inequities. Rock against Racism gives us the dialogue through music, to look at a variety of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds examine the racial and ethnic groups how they live.
